Sleep apnea specialists are not all the same. Assessment and treatment of sleep apnea can be guided by a doctor, a dentist or a whole-of-clinic approach. There are private and public services as well as options to arrange your own assessment from the comfort of your own home.
Here’s an overview of types of sleep apnea specialists, followed by a selection of options in your city.
Sleep Apnea Specialist options
Private Sleep & Respiratory physicians and clinics
Sleep & respiratory physicians are doctors who have specialist training in sleep medicine. They are qualified to diagnose and treat sleep apnea as well as other sleep disorders.
Some physicians work solo but most work within a clinic – either within a private hospital or in a stand-alone clinic. Many have the support of allied health clinicians, like psychologists, as well as technical assistance from sleep scientists.
Public Sleep & Respiratory services
All capital cities and many regional centres have sleep clinics as part of the state’s public hospital system. These are overseen by Sleep & Respiratory physicians and are staffed by doctors who are training in sleep medicine as well as nurses, scientists, and other allied health professionals.
Like any public health service, there can be long waiting times.
One of the recognised treatments for sleep apnea is mandibular advancement splints (often referred to as ‘oral appliances’). These are most commonly fitted by dentists, meaning that some dentists and dental clinics specialise in sleep apnea.
Not all dentists have an interest in, or knowledge about sleep apnea and oral appliances, so you’ll need to search for one near you with this expertise.
At Sleeping Test, we recommend testing for sleep apnea using the WatchPAT, a device specifically designed for being used in the comfort of your own bed on a night of your choice. The program is overseen by a registered nurse who specialises in sleep apnea and all tests are reviewed and reported by a Sleep & Respiratory physician.
If the barrier of waiting for an appointment and travelling to a clinic for testing is prohibitive for you, Sleeping Test is a fast and dynamic pathway to get testing done fast so, if needed, you can start sleep apnea treatment as soon as possible.
Finding sleep apnea specialists in your city
We’ve made it easier to start your sleep specialist search with a directory for each capital city in Australia. This list is by no means exhaustive and we’re not affiliated with these specialists in any way, but it’s a starting point to get you on your way to a better night’s sleep. An online search will help steer you toward plenty of options near you.
